Work it out

Start with four questions, then use your own bill

You get a straight answer, even if it is “not yet”. Then put your own numbers into the estimator. It all runs in your browser and nothing is stored.

1. Do you already have solar panels?
2. What is your roof like?
3. When is power used in your home?
4. Do you have an electric car, or a smart meter and a cheap overnight tariff?

An estimate, not a quote. Assumes a south-facing roof with little shade making about 900 kWh for each kWp a year, and that 35% of solar power is used in the home as it is made. Prices are typical ranges as of October 2026 and assume 0% VAT, which ends 31 March 2027, then 5%. A battery loses about 10% of power in and out. Sources: Energy Saving Trust, Ofgem, GOV.UK. Quick answers

Questions we hear a lot

How much does solar and a battery cost in Broadstairs?

As of October 2026 we estimate a 4 kWp solar system at about £5,500 to £7,500, and 4.5 kWp with a 5 kWh battery at about £8,500 to £12,500. A 5 kWh battery on its own is about £2,750 to £4,750. These are estimates built from Energy Saving Trust figures and our own ranges, not quotes.

Is a home battery worth it?

It depends on how you use power. A battery on its own saves less than solar does. It helps most if you are out in the day and use power in the evening, or can charge it on a cheap overnight tariff. The Energy Saving Trust says battery savings will not always justify the cost on their own. Our estimator shows the numbers for your home.

When does 0% VAT on solar and batteries end?

The 0% VAT rate on installations runs to 31 March 2027 under HMRC VAT Notice 708/6. From 1 April 2027 the reduced rate of 5% applies, unless the rules change. The notice lists electrical battery storage among the covered materials.

Do I need planning permission for solar panels in Broadstairs?

Most roof panels on a house in England are permitted development. In a conservation area, panels must not be fitted to a wall that fronts a highway, and Thanet District Council advises a side or rear slope. The council's list names Broadstairs, Kingsgate, Reading Street and St Peter's. Flats and listed buildings have extra limits, so we check your address first.

I live in a flat or rent my home. What can I do?

Plug-in solar became legal in Great Britain on 27 August 2026 for approved kits, and needs written permission from your landlord or freeholder. A battery inside the home is another route. We cover both honestly on our plug-in solar page.

Who connects my system to the network in Broadstairs?

Kent is in the South Eastern Power Networks area, part of UK Power Networks. Your installer tells them about your system, and larger systems need approval first. We confirm your network operator from your meter number at the quote.

What do suppliers pay for exported power?

Under the Smart Export Guarantee each supplier sets the rate, and it must be above zero. In October 2026 we found 12p per kWh at British Gas and for Octopus Outgoing customers, and 17.5p at E.ON Next and 18p at EDF, the last two tied to that supplier's own installation. The Energy Saving Trust says you typically get around 12p.
